Friends, On the night of January 18, I wrote these words to many of you: We all travel different paths in life, but they all take us toward the same destination. I hope that our experiences that we've shared will help you with your journey as well. Although I didn’t realize that Nola’s journey would end the next night, we both knew the end was in sight. That journey was made easier and more fulfilling by the love and support that you and countless others offered us along the way. Through your funny cards and emails, phone calls and visits, and too many gifts and meals to mention, we always knew that we were not alone. And though I really believe that Nola’s calm and jaunty demeanor closely matched her inherent confidence and wisdom, I cannot say that I was without great trepidation at the outset of this final journey. Through both your support and her guidance, I somehow found the strength to chronicle and share our trip together with growing acceptance and peace. My loss is immeasurable. But my life has been so enriched and transformed by our shared experience that I now feel greater strength to face my own journey onward--for I will not be alone. I will continue to draw upon the wisdom of my life companion and the support of those she touched. I wish you all equal or even greater fortitude and assurance in your own separate journeys.
