Last night after returning from dinner with friends, I logged into my Facebook page. I was reading comments posted on the "You know you're from Davis when..." page. Much to my surprise was a thread regarding the passing of Nola Haggerty. After reading the post I sat for a moment to reflect. My first job at U.C.Davis was at the Student Health Center. Anyone who worked there knows it was filled with very kind, loving and caring people. Nola was that and a whole lot more. She had a wacky zest for life that is hard to explain to those who did not have the pleasure of knowing her. There are no amount of words that can adequately describe her. In my life I have known two Nola's. Nola Haggerty and one of my brother's girl friends. Although they were from different generations they both had the same unique characteristics and zest for life. You know, the kind of person whose presences lights up a room. After working at the Student Health Center I went to work at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. One day a client came in with a litter of kittens. They were the most beautiful kittens. One had this cute little expression on his face and these big green eyes. At the time I was told that "he" was a "she" kitten. So, I named her (him) Nola. After Nola Haggerty and Nola who was my brother's girl friend. There was something about this kitten that reminded me of "The Nola's" That "thing" they both had that is hard to explain. For the eight or so years that Nola, the cat shared a home with me, she put a smile on my face even on the worst of days. Just like Nola Haggerty. Nola, thank you for all of your wackiness. Thank you for all of the smiles you put on my face. Most of all, thank you for just being you... R.I.P. Donna Browning
